SustainableWebsites.com hosting does NOT have 24/7 phone tech support! This is a huge problem, if you believe your time is valuable. SustainableWebsites claims to be carbon-neutral. I guess this why they charge so much for so little.
I like BlueHost …They are offering some really good deals right now. GoDaddy‘s hosting is pretty good too. Also, I should add that I’ve had some great experiences with IXWebHosting.com‘s tech support too.
24-hour tech support is just SO necessary in my opinion, carbon-neutral or not. Would you buy a carbon neutral car if it didn’t actually run? I wouldn’t.
SustainableWebsites is way more expensive than other hosting providers and falls way short, in my opinion. Look at what they offer and compare it to the others I mentioned.
IXWebHosting and BlueHost both offer unlimited space and unlimited data transfer in their least expensive packages! You can host a small business’ site on IX for about $5/month!
Use the money you save to by some carbon credits or something. At least you’ll be able to call your hosting provider whenever something goes wrong, talk to a real person, and find out what’s going on.
Andrew, as you are new developer on our systems, I was disappointed to see this irresponsible post from you after just one experience. To be clear to your readers, it was your unfamiliarity with our systems that caused the error, and we did help you resolve it. We’ve had customers happy with email support for years – and we have a knowledge base article explaining why we think email support is better to start off with, because it provides written step-by-step instructions. In addition, phone support is available from professional web designers. Although there is a charge, it is above and beyond what is available from tech support people at the other companies you mention.
Unlimited space and data transfer (overselling) is purely a selling feature and not actually needed by most hosting customers. It’s inherently unsustainable – Please read:

It’s an unnecessary feature war that is squeezing out the smaller providers that provide personalized service, and promoting the consolidation of hosting into large companies, some of them, like GoDaddy owned by extremely right-wing conservative businessmen. It’s also not technically feasible – if you look at the terms and conditions of these plans you will find that there are in fact limits. Also, we are a green business that like to support other green businesses and keep the green economy growing. If that means we pay a little more for organic food and clothing, or for green power, that is our choice, and one we hope our customers make too.
We’ve had many customers move to us from BlueHost, GoDaddy, and Dreamhost. To them, the extra expense is justified in the personalized support from qualified web developers instead of server techs. If you had worked a little longer with us, you would have enjoyed this benefit.
